There are two types of Sciatica: True sciatica and Pseudo-sciatica.
True sciatica is caused by affecting the sciatic nerve directly. This is most often caused when the sciatica nerve is irritated by a tense or inflamed piriformis muscle or gluteal notch, as the sciatic nerve passes through these body parts.
Pseudo-Sciatica is defined as sciatic like symptoms that originate from structures other than the sciatic nerve. Some examples of pseudo -sciatica are disc herniation, lumbar bone spurs, and sacroiliac sprains. These are all conditions that can radiate pain into the leg.
