Headaches are probably the most misunderstood and mistreated disorders in the United States. Did you know that one in every six Americans suffers from chronic, reoccurring headaches? If there are 280 million people in this country, then on any given day millions and millions of people have a headache. That's the bad news. The good news is that if you are one of them, you may not have to continue suffering.
If you suffer from headaches, then I think you'll agree that there is nothing that can ruin your day more quickly than the throbbing, pounding pain in your skull that just won't go away. Has your headache pain ever caused you to go home early from work, or not be able to participate in activities with your friends or family? No one should have to live like that. So what do you do?
Like millions of Americans each day, you probably take some over-the-counter pills that may or may not give you temporary relief. The next day or a few days later, the headache can come right back and you repeat the pill taking process.
Take a moment to think about this statement: If the pills you're taking are supposed to cure your headache, then why should you ever have to take them again? Aren't you cured?
Headaches are not caused by a lack of drugs. Now here is an example of a typical headache sufferer who takes some type of pain pill when he gets a headache.
Let's pretend the person is me. I get an average of three headaches each week. Every time I get a headache, I take two over-the-counter pills. That would mean I'd be taking six pills a week for 52 weeks a year - that's 312 pills. I wonder how long I keep doing this before it does some damage to my body.
Before we go any further, let me stress to you that there is a place for medication, but more importantly, the cause of the problem must be identified. It has been said that the definition on insanity is doing the same things and expecting different results.
If you truly want to get rid of your headaches, then you're going to have to try something different. One of the most common causes of headaches that don't originate in the head is call a cervicogenic headache. This type of headache has its origen in the neck and it accounts for nearly 90 percent of all headaches.
In order to find out if your headaches are caused by a problem in your neck, you will need to get an examination from a doctor who is specially trained in diagnosing and treating your problem. Select a doctor who has seen and treated thousands of patients with headache problems like yours.
As a chiropractor, I am specially trained in the treatments of spinal-related problems. My office is in Orange, CA.
