Chiropractic Care for SARS Patients

Mary Franz - Mar 31st, 2011

Sudden acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a fast-moving and severe respiratory infection caused by a virus related to the common cold. SARS can spread very quickly through the air as well as on surfaces. In 2003, there was a deadly outbreak of SARS, but thanks to an aggressive campaign launched by the World Health Organization, the spread was eventually diminished and partially contained, though the threat of another outbreak is always possible.

After the initial battle to survive SARS, some patients encountered secondary neuromusculoskeletal issues. In a recent study, three healthcare workers presented with neuromusculoskeletal issues following infection with SARS. The patients had various physical ailments, and conservative chiropractic care was used to decrease muscle spasms, increase joint mobility and improve the ability to perform daily tasks.

To achieve this, patients underwent spinal manipulative therapy, soft tissue therapy, various modalities and rehabilitation. Patients recorded their pain ratings before and following treatment. Disability indices were measured as well and whether or not the patients were able to return to work.

All patients had intermittent relief of pain and improvement in disability status. The study shows that chiropractic care is effective in treating neuromusculoskeletal conditions after respiratory illness.
