A number of studies have shown that patients who avoid movement because they fear causing low-back pain can actually worsen their condition. These patients have been taught at some point, either by the pain itself or their caregiver, to avoid all movement, especially flexion, when they experience back pain. This lack of movement, often combined with stiffening of the spine and muscle groups, worsens their original condition.
In a recent study, it was found that preventative spinal manipulation can lower fear-based avoidance behavior. Ninety-eight patients were designated to be in one of three groups. The preventative phase lasted 10 months. The first group met with a chiropractor every 2 months. They were evaluated and able to discuss their symptoms with the chiropractor. The second group had one monthly spinal manipulation therapy (SMT) session. The third group had the same SMT session, but also performed exercises at home.
The researchers found that all three groups had improved scores on their Fear-Avoidance Behavior questionnaire during the preventative phase at the trial. These conclusions support a growing body of evidence that chiropractic can help patients recover their full health potential.
