Chiropractic Care for Disability Cases

Many people who suffer from chronic neck or back pain may reach a point where they can no longer work. Not only is this a financial burden, it can be an emotional burden. Patients with chronic neck or back pain are prone to depression, especially if the pain has lead to a disability status.

It's important to address chronic neck and back pain as soon as possible to ensure the quickest return to work. Statistically speaking, the longer a person is unable to work, the less likely they are to return. Patients who opt for surgical treatment may be on a long path to recovery, and prescription drugs given for pain and inflammation only mask the underlying problem.

In a recent study (1), a patient with chronic spine pain who had been on disability for two years underwent chiropractic manipulation and pain education. Clear communication with her employers and restricted duty were also key aspects of her treatment. After 15 weeks, the patient (a nurse) was able to return to work on a part-time basis and eventually, full-time.

Though many people do not return to work after two years of disability, chiropractic care and an integrated approach worked for this patient.
